P has spent the last few summers teaching at Stanford. It’s a nice gig with interesting students and beautiful surroundings. At the end of the session, the program hosts a graduation ceremony for the students. This year it was held in The New Guinea Sculpture Garden, which houses some beautiful carvings from New Guinea carvers.
Stanford and the Papua New Guinea artists in-residence collaborated on the carvings and the overall aesthetic of the garden. The focus was on a combination of traditional Papua New Guinea art in a western landscape. The combination of the Northern California landscape with the New Guinea traditional art makes for a peaceful and quiet retreat on campus.
It’s like taking a little vacation while strolling around campus. If you’re ever at Stanford, I recommend grabbing a cup of tea from the union and then strolling over and checking it out.
Wow, what great artistry.
It really was! Stanford has some great art on campus, including other outdoor sculptures from Rodin like the Burghers of Calais.
I remembered the Eater Island monuments when seeing this masterpiece. Just thought that Pacific, Papua New Genuean & Polynesian artist has a sense of common artistry! Great post!
Thanks!
Looks interesting! It’s amazing how we can use natural resources to make something so stunning! Good post!
Thank you!
My fave is the second pic from the bottom. He looks like he’d be great company for a cuppa tea.
Hehe!
Those faces are sooo creepy! However, I would love it if I had one like that in my house! I think it would create an interesting atmosphere! 🙂

I wonder what an American sculpture garden would look like in the middle of Papua New Guinea. Giant cheese burgers sculptures standing next to statues of Elvis? Fun post.
oh my. I can only imagine what an American sculpture garden would look like. Hopefully the artists could work in some of America’s more “sophisticated” works.

Superb.
Thank you! It was a beautiful sculpture garden.
Thanks for sharing! I live very close and hadn’t heard of it! I’ll have to check it out
I hope you get a chance to visit it!
Thanks for the information. It looks fabulous!
Amazing! Congrats on the FP.
